Rex Rabbit, 2000–2008

Mighty Rex Rabbit passed away this week. He was almost 8 years old.

He was a good bunny, but he was tough. He came from the House Rabbit Society in Richmond, where he had a reputation as a bit of a mixer. When they would vacuum the rugs, he used to try and fight the vacuum cleaner. He was very well-behaved when we came to our house, but when Oski moved in, he let him know in no uncertain terms he wouldn't take any guff!

He loved dandelion greems, bananas, his hay, and hanging out in his tube. We'll miss him, but we know he's scampering around in the Great Meadow in the Sky!

Here's a bunny who's been hanging around our backyard:

Supposedly, he/she belongs to someone on the next block. The rabbit turns up in our backyard off and on. We'd prefer its owners kept a closer eye on him/her!

It's been a while - here's a whole bunch of new cats - and dogs!

First, here's Ariel:

Ariel's been at the shelter for awhile. She's a very sweet cat, but very particular! She's a little princess, as you can see here:

Another new addition is Logan:

Logan was very scared when he first got here, and was keeping to the back of his cage. Now, a week or so later, he's very talkative and affectionate!

Luther is a very sweet boy:

He's also new and a little uncertain, but he loves rubbing against your leg and enjoyed looking out the window at the passing birds!

Heather is a playful little kitten:

Another new kitten is Twiggy:

Last week, she was hiding out under her blanky all the time - now she's graduated to sleeping on top of it.

Porsche is a slightly older kitten, but still young:

He's one of two black cats the shelter is playing host to at the moment.

And just for a switch, here's a couple of dogs! Precious seems very happy and well-behaved:

And Keaton is very calm and friendly:

He's gotten a nice grooming since this photo was taken.

Emma is one of the outdoor cats living here when we moved in. She's always been real skittish, but the past couple of years, during the winter, she's started to come into the house, and now will spend the whole day sleeping indoors. Here she is in the bottom compartment of the cat tree:

Lots of new cats at the shelter! So many, I forgot a couple of their names! Here's one I remember - his name is Valdez:

He's a big boy who doesn't mind being grabbed and held.

And this is Morgan. She's really sweet!

Can't remember this cat's name. She's a good looking cat!

This is Ginger. She's not happy about her new temporary home.

This cat came in with Ginger. She was very shy in the playroom, then all of a sudden perked up and wanted to make friends.

This is Zora. She actually came in last week. She's not as goofy-looking in person as in this picture, btw.

Here's a little kitten that isn't even officially part of the shelter yet. Isn't he cute???

And finally, here's a new rabbit that just came in. She's an Angora.

She loves being held and petted! Quite a difference from Rex Rabbit!

Lilly's one of the "older cats" at the shelter. She's about three years old, and she's been a resident since June. She's a sweet cat - I don't know why someone hasn't snapped her up!

First off, we've got a very special shelter guest: Blossom the Iguana!

Here are a few denizens of the local Humane Society shelter...

Mamar is a tubby little tortoise shell. She's a little shy, but friendly overall. She kind of reminds us of Sadie.

Pumpkin is a rambunctious little boy. He loves his feather toy!

Chloe is a cute kitten with a very fluffy tail. She had a sister, Emily, who got adopted. Why she's still there, I don't know!

Goodbye, Sadie

Sadly, we must report Sadie - one of the "cats who came with the house" - passed away Friday.

My lovely wife called Sadie the "optimisti-cat" because she had a sunny personality and always seemed happy.

Here she is trying out as spokescat for "Ak-Mak: the Cracker So Good Cats Ask For It By Name!"

We'll miss Sadie, but knows she's happy chasing mice with Nicki and Cleo in the Great Meadow in the Sky!

Nicki, 1990-2007

We had a memorial for Nicki yesterday, who passed away in July. My lovely wife sang a couple of songs and everyone got something in their eye. Then came the food - little tuna sandwiches and a Chinese chicken salad, because Nicki liked tuna and chicken (what he really liked was sardines and jack mackarel, but we had to draw the line somewhere!).

Here's some pictures of Nicki, who was a very good pussycat.

Rabbits at the Shelter

There are now three rabbits at our local shelter. First, there's Humphrey:

He's a very big bunny! He's a little grumpy, but he loves being petted and having his ears scratched.

Here's Flopper:

She's a cute little bunny who loves to sit in people's laps.

The newest addition is S'more:

Not much is known about her, though she seems to like getting under things.

All three rabbits were found out in the open - another reason rabbits should be indoor pets!

A few cute cats from the local shelter...

These two are devoted sisters, and very playful. They finally got names! Originally, some of the "kid" volunteers named them "Dip" and "Stick", but that wasn't too popular with the "adults." They look like a Molly and Mary - and so they are!

Here's Kyrra sleeping in a pile of blankets and toys in the "play room".

Someone took her in there with a couple of other cats and forgot to take her out. Later, everyone was frantic because they couldn't find her. She was chilling out the whole time!

She's part siamese and part something else - I'm guessing calico. Apparently, she's very shy, but she seems pretty friendly.

They don't have names yet, so I'm thinking of either Charlotte and Emily or Molly and Sarah...

Here are some of the occupants of the local Humane Society shelter (cat division)...

These two are sisters, and they are so cute! They don't have names yet, so that will be my next project...

This is Emma - she actually lives at the shelter.

Sam says "Let me out of here!"

This cute little cat has been given the nickname "Clueless," but I'm changing it to "Sabrina." She's rather high-strung and was socialized poorly by one of the other volunteers, but she's really sweet and would make someone with no children a great pet. So if you're in the Bay Area and looking for a cat...!!!

And if you can put a couple of coins in their cup, all the above residents would greatly appreciate it!

They're all available for adoption at the Benicia-Vallejo Humane Society. If you can't adopt one, maybe you can drop them a couple bucks. They're a no-kill shelter, so they could use it! (They've also got plenty of dogs, some guinea pigs, and a tarantula!)

It was nearly two years ago that Fiona turned up under our front porch, yowling. Here's the first picture we took of her:

She was so tiny, we thought she was barely a month old.

Eventually, the vet said she was probably about 8 weeks old when we found her, but that she was just a tiny cat. She grew pretty quick, though!

And here she is in a recent photo - all grown up!

She's a good little pussycat and we're glad to have her!

The East Bay SPCA has a storefront right across the street from the place I was working at in Oakland this week. They had plenty of kittens!

Cats and Rabbits Living Together!

People always ask if the cats and Rex Rabbit get along. Well... yes and no. They generally leave each other alone. But Oski wants to play with Rex. Rex doesn't want to play with Oski. Rex wants to play with Nicki, but Nicki doesn't want to play with Rex. Fiona wants to drink the water out of Rex's bowl, and Rex chases her out of his pen if he catches her. In fact, Rex isn't shy about chasing any of the cats away if they bug him. Moon, in the meantime, pretty much just stays out of it.

Anyway, sometimes they agree to co-exist... here's Oski and Rex sitting close (but not too close) together in his "cage".

BTW, they were much closer about 20 minutes before I took these pictures, but then there was a little scuffle...
